Why Is Posture Important And How Can You Fix Yours?

Bad posture is something that a lot of people struggle with, especially if you’re working at a computer all day long. It’s easy to fall into bad habits and slouch over but it will have a big impact on your posture and that’s bad news.

A lot of people don’t really think it’s that much of an issue but bad posture can actually have a lot of negative health effects. It can cause problems with digestion, spinal damage, and it can even impact your mental health.

When you walk with bad posture and you’re constantly slouched over, it makes you feel less confident and positive and that contributes to low feelings. So, fixing your posture is important, but how are you supposed to do it?

These are some of the most effective ways to improve your posture:

Don’t Slouch:

If you do work at a desk all day, it’s important that you constantly pay attention to your posture and try to correct it if you feel it slipping. You need to make sure that you’re not slouching and you’re sitting with both feet flat on the floor and a straight back.

Often, people struggle because they don’t have enough support from their chair and they end up slouching. If that’s the case, you should invest in a better office chair (or ask your boss for one) and it should make a big difference.

You could also look into getting a standing desk because they’re far better for your back than sitting down. You also engage more muscles when you’re standing, which means that you burn more calories, so a standing desk is better for your health overall.

Cut Down On Screen Time:

It seems like people are quick to blame smartphones for any problem these days, but when it comes to posture, it might not be far from the truth. When you’re using a phone, you’re usually looking downwards and if you’re spending a lot of time on your phone every day, that will lead to poor posture, especially in your neck and shoulders.

It’s such a common problem that doctors even have a term for it; text neck.

If you spend a lot of time scrolling on your phone, you might want to consider cutting down a bit. That doesn’t mean that you can never use your phone again, just try not to spend extended periods of time scrolling through social media if you don’t really need to. When you do need to use your phone, try to make an effort to hold it upright in front of your face. It might feel a bit unnatural to start with but it’s so much better for your posture.

Change Your Driving Position

A lot of people have bad posture because the driving position in their car is wrong. When you’re on a long drive, it feels good to recline a bit so you’re more comfortable, but it’s not good for your posture at all. You need to bring your seat closer to the steering wheel and try not to lock your legs. Have your knees slightly bent and try to keep them around hip height.

If you feel that you’re not very well supported, you can put a pillow or a rolled up towel at the base of your back, which will help you to maintain good posture. It takes a bit of getting used to but if you’re driving every day and your seat position isn’t right, it will have a big impact on your posture.

Strengthen Shoulder And Back Muscles

Your shoulder and back muscles are very important if you want good posture and if they’re not very strong, you’ll find it very hard to maintain the right standing and sitting position.

When you have bad posture and you’re constantly slouched forward, your back and shoulder muscles aren’t engaged, so they’re never going to get stronger unless you do specific exercises to strengthen them. There are a couple of simple things that you can do at home, like a water bottle extension. Just take a full water bottle in one hand, extend your arm in front of you, and try to hold it there for as long as possible. Repeat this a few times with each arm on a daily basis and you should start to notice a difference.

If you find that you’re not seeing results from simple exercises, you may need to hit the gym and dedicate some time to strengthening your shoulders. The best way to do that is by using various shrug exercises with a barbell weight. These exercises involve taking a barbell, lifting with your legs and then drawing your shoulders upwards in a shrugging motion.

This will strengthen the muscles in your shoulders and your back very effectively. However, you can seriously injure yourself if you do these exercises incorrectly so you need to make sure that you learn how to do them properly before you get started.

Update Your Mattress

The right mattress is so important if you want to fix your posture. If you sleep on an old, saggy mattress, you’re not giving your back any support at all and you’re likely to wake up with a bad back and your posture will suffer. People often say that you should replace your mattress every 7 to 10 years but that’s actually a common myth.

It may serve as a rough guideline but it really depends on how you sleep on the mattress and how often you rotate it. The best way to know whether you should replace your mattress or not is to consider how you feel when you wake up. If you feel tired and your back is aching, your mattress needs to be replaced. But if you wake up feeling well rested, even if the mattress is older than 10 years, it should be fine.

You also need to be careful with sleeping positions as well. A thinner pillow is better for your back because your head should be level with your spine. If you sleep on your side, you should pull your knees up slightly but not too much, otherwise, you’ll bend your back.

Poor posture can have a lot of different negative health effects so it’s important that you take steps to improve it where you can. Start by utilizing some of these tips and you should start to see an improvement in your posture!
