Looking after yourself should be top of your priority list. No matter how hectic your life is, you always need to find the time to look after number one. By doing this, you can recharge and regenerate, reducing things like stress and avoiding burnout.
Looking after your well-being is vital if you have a family. It enables you to make better decisions that affect everyone. Besides, ensuring that your well-being is as good as possible is a good role model for your children to follow.
How to Enhance your Well-being and Happiness
Sleep
Do not underestimate the power of sleep to enhance your life. If you are regularly getting less than seven hours a night, you could be doing yourself some harm. Your memory will be affected, as will your body’s availability to repair damage and rejuvenate itself. Not to mention the extra stress you will feel from being tired. Lack of sleep can often lead to many other more serious illnesses too. So, try and get between seven and nine hours a night.
Find Time
How can you do this? You may well ask. Well, one way is to embrace the use of the word ‘No’. Once you begin using it and finding more time for yourself and your family, you may become a little addicted. Simply declining invites, or refusing to help out at this or that event, and not doing those favors at work you are used to doing, will go a long way to reducing your stress levels and finding you time. This may be particularly effective if you are a people pleaser. That is a trait that gets you pretty much nowhere in the grand scheme of things. So, be a little more selfish and do what you want to do.
Indulge a Little
You are allowed to have time just for you. Whether that be a hot warm bath with aromatherapy oils, or getting your hair done, having that secret cake, or even chatting on party line numbers, you need to indulge a little. It is these things that make your life worthwhile. If you do not enjoy yourself every once in a while, you will get stressed and reach burnout. It is a wise person that knows they need to do something just for them.
Exercise
Exercise is a huge component to your overall well-being and happiness. Even if you haven’t exercised in a long time, there is no reason why you cannot start now. Walking every couple of days is a great way to start. Exercise boosts your happiness by naturally increasing serotonin in the brain, which is the happy chemical. Not to mention that you will get that buzz from knowing you have done something good and just for yourself.
Meditate
Meditation is a great stress reliever. It can help you develop a new perspective and can assist you in prioritizing your responsibilities, among other things. Just ten minutes a day is enough to level you out and help you develop a new calm. Just free yourself from distractions, close your eyes and concentrate on your breathing. Let thoughts fly away until you are focused on the now.
I utilize all of these tips in my own life on a regular basis, and I can immediately tell when I haven’t prioritized one of them in my daily life. Enhancing your well-being and happiness is a life long endeavor, but so worth the effort!
