We all do our best to care for our health, but are you doing so in the right ways? Sometimes our actions to be healthy can actually not be the best for us. Overexerting yourself or becoming obsessive over any one thing can turn out to be detrimental. In order to accomplish a more healthy balance in your life, try these suggestions to live a more healthy lifestyle.
Go to the Doctor
It’s a tale as old as time, but it holds merit. The best way you can ensure a healthy lifestyle is by regularly going to the doctor. Getting your physicals, going for regular cleanings at the dentist, and checking in with your eye doctor are all smart ways to make sure you’re staying on top of your health. Having routine check-ups will be the most efficient way to know if something is taking a turn for the worse and allow you the most time to alter it.
It also allows you to get the information you may need. Regularly visiting your doctors means there is a routine form of communication. With this communication, you are more likely to be up to date on the best practices you need to live a healthy lifestyle. For example, the American Dental Association recommends brushing twice a day and if you’re someone who goes to the dentist regularly, you would know you should also be flossing each time you brush your teeth as well.
But caring for your health isn’t just physical. Your mental health is equally as important as well. You cannot have a healthy lifestyle without taking care of both your physical and mental health.
Care for Your Mental Health
Caring for your mental health can look like a lot of different things, but it’s a key part of achieving healthy balance. For example, the most common reason for braces is aesthetics. People aren’t happy with how their teeth look, so they get braces or Invisalign. And 47% of Invisalign Teen users surveyed had a boost of self-esteem in the process of treatment as well as 22% of teens with metal braces. If your smile is something that’s causing you distress and a poor self-image, consider doing what you can to fix the problem. It could be braces, brushing more frequently, or using tooth whitening strips for a brighter smile. Taking action can be a healthy way to monitor your mental health.
Sometimes a lack of action can be a good thing for your mental health as well. Not only is taking breaks necessary, but sometimes not beating yourself up over something is really what you need. For example, about two to three out of every 1,000 children in the United States are born with a detectable level of hearing loss in one or both ears.
While taking whatever necessary actions to allow for comfortable communication is important, whether it be hearing aids, different procedures, or simply learning ASL, sometimes the best thing you can do for your mental health is to not look for a “cure.” It can be easy to get carried away and feel like a hearing deficiency or deafness altogether needs to be remedied. However, sometimes the healthiest thing you can do for your mental health is to just accept yourself and live your life regardless. Not everything needs to be or even can always be fixed.
Living a healthy balance and lifestyle means finding the right amount of action and inaction. It’s important to be active, eat right, go to the doctors, and do the things you can to live healthier. But it is also important to rest, accept the things you cannot change, and care for yourself.
