Did you have a wild and misspent youth? Or know someone who did? I do! I had a few adventures of my own, but nothing compared to those of my husband! I love when he’s in the mood tell stories about his “glory days”. Some of the stories are a little crazy, lots are pretty funny, and some are cringe worthy. Like the time he got tossed around by an angry bull, or the time he crashed his motorcycle and cracked his helmet in half. CRAZY!
Now that he’s older and somewhat wiser, some of those wild and crazy adventures have long term repercussions, namely chronic pain. As a truck driver he spends long days driving his big truck climbing in and out, tarpping loads, adding straps climbing over loads to secure them. All that physical activity, in edition to his chronic pain as a result of his good’ole days make for some pretty hefty pain!
And he’s not alone in dealing with it, I had a pretty nasty accident as a teenager and it messed up my knee pretty good. Chronic pain is regular, “normal” thing in our house… and its no fun! And some days are worse than others.
When my hubby is on the road, and has a particularly bad day, its really hard for me not to be there to help take care of him… sooooo I decided to put together a “pain management” pack for him to take with him, and I started by making him this DIY Personalized Travel Case!
This is a quick and easy DIY that adds a little charm and personalization to an otherwise boring travel bag!
Ready to make your own DIY personalized travel case? Here’s what you need:
basic travel cosmetics bag
needle
embroidery floss
scissors
white fabric or chalk pencil
Step 1: Decide where and what you want to add to your DIY personalized travel case. I settled on an upper left corner and to add my hub’s initials. Write out what you want with the fabric pencil to create your stitching guide.
Step 2: Thread your needle and add a knot about 2 inches from the end of your embroidery floss.
Step 3: I find its easiest to stitch right to left when doing words, so bring your needle up on the far left spot and gently tug through until the knot catches.
Step 4: Get to stitching! With the thicker canvas of this travel bag it was easiest to back stitch one up or down motion at a time. As you stitch, weave in the tail from the end of the floss to secure it further.
Step 5: Once you’ve got everything stitched up, weave in some of the left over thread on the backside to secure your stitches.
Ta-da! You have a super-duper, extra special DIY personalized travel case! Now lets talk about what I put in this pain management case for my hubby to take on the road with him!
- homemade ice pack with removeable & washable cover (tutorial on this coming soon!)
- instant hot packs
- tensor wrist wrap
- A little something for his sweet tooth (cause sugar always helps!)

My husband is a disabled veteran who deals with chronic pain. I actually wrote about Curamin on my own blog. His neurologist recommended it since he won’t be able to have surgery (too dangerous where they’d need to operate). Curamin has made a tremendous difference and this coupled with some good stretching and physical activity has helped so much.
HAHA and yes, I do have some glory day stories of my own. They include travel, too ;). Great travel case!

My husband has a lot of pain from growing up in a farming family. He never dreamed that it would catch up with him this quickly! #client

I’m terrible at sewing but I have never had the idea of penciling in the letters first. This is seriously brilliant and blew my mind. It sure makes it that much easier in my head now! lol My husband has his stories as well and sometimes I can barely listen to the craziness. I just tell him I’m glad he doesn’t do that anymore. 😛

I am in love with how simple this DIY is but it adds so much color and character to your travel bag! I will have to do this on all our bags so that we know whose is whose. I will have to look into this product and see if it will help us!

That is a smart idea to put your initials on your travel case! My husband travels for work frequently. I need to do this for him. I am the one who suffers from chronic pain. I will check out Curamin! Thanks for the tips!

We both suffer from chronic pain, especially us both being runners and I lift weights. I love the personal touch that you added, it’s great for big families that want to tell apart all toiletry bags. I am not a good sewer, but this seems like it’s easy enough to follow after you trace it out.

What a great idea to personalize the travel case like that. Such a simple idea but makes a great statement. We travel a lot during the summer and fall — so this would be a great father’s day gift!
