101 Handmade Days: Rice Eye Pillow

This post may contain affiliate or brand partner links. Read our full disclosure here.

Tired eyes… those tired eyes are a pain in the butt aren’t they? I’ve been dealing with a lot of tired, puffy eyes lately… dealing with some health issues and a whole bunch of deadlines has given me late nights and dark circles under my tired eyes. Reglar old ice packs just won’t cut it when it comes to the delicate and sensitive parts of your body, especially your eyes… so I made myself a rice eye pillow!

What you need:

Fabric of your choice

12-13 inches of Flat Elastic

Thread

Sewing Machine

Scissors

Uncooked Rice

Lavender Buds (optional)

Needle (for hand stitching)

Template

To make the template I used a roll of tape to get the curves and then played with the shape. I found what I liked after the 3rd attempt… picture my husband laughing at me while I modeled a paper template over my eyes and snapped selfies to see how it looked.

Once you’ve got your template figured out, trace it onto your fabric and then cut out 2 pieces.

With the right side facing up, pin your elastic down. Make sure the top of the straight pin is facing out.

Next place the second piece of fabric right side down and pin securely.

Sew a 1/4 inch seam all the way around, leaving a 2 inch gap along one of the straight edges. Be sure to reinforce the elastic by sewing back and forth a few times.

Grab part of the elastic through the turning hole and gently pull to turn right side out. Gently push out the corners and curves.

Carefully poor in 2/3’s to 1 cup of rice depending on how full you want your rice eye pillow to be. You can also add a teaspoon or 2 of lavender buds. I’ve done one rice eye pillow with lavender and one with out.

Once you’ve got it filled with rice to the point you’d like, its time to sew the hole closed. I use this method to create a practically invisible closure.

I have used my rice eye pillow at least a dozen times in the past few days 🙂 I’ve kept it in a ziploc sandwich baggie in the freezer ( don’t want the freezer fumes to get in the fabric/rice). Its been awesome for when I’m really tired and the dark circles / puffiness is trying to take over my face. I keep the rice eye pillow with lavender in a sandwich bag on the counter and heart it up for about 25 seconds when I’ve got a headache. It helps sooo much!

Make your own Rice Eye Pillow! You can heat or freeze them and they’re so handy!! #101handmadedays

These eye pillows are great for deep relaxation and relieve stress. These can be also useful for treating puffy eyes. It is really easy to make with your instructions. Thanks for sharing.
