So I’ve kind of fallen in love with making my own unique mugs…. or should I say giving boring mugs a fun makeover? Last week when I was working on my DIY Mercury Glass Vase, I had the brilliant idea ( I can call myself brilliant right?) to use the same technique on a plain white mug I had sitting around. The end result? Perfection in an Antiqued Mercury Glass Effect Mug!!
Here’s what you need to make your own Antiqued Mercury Glass Effect Mug:
Plain White Mug
Krylon Looking Glass Spray Paint
Krylon Clear Coat Spray Paint
1/2 Water 1/2 Vinegar mix in a spray bottle
Painters Tape
Paper Towels
Step One: Prep your mug. Add a layer of painters tape around the top of the bug, about an inch from the top. Also completely cover the top of the mug so no paint gets inside.
Step two: Add a couple layers of the looking glass spray paint. Allowing 30 seconds to a minute between coats. Make sure the mug is evenly and thoroughly coated in the spray paint.
Step three: Before the final coat is completely dry, spritz some of the water/vinegar mixture on to the spray painted area. Allow it to sit for 5 to 10 seconds and then dab off gently with the paper towel.
Step four: Rub gently rub and distress with the paper towel as desired. Allow everything to dry completely.
Step five: Spray a clear coat all over the distressed looking glass spray. Allow to dry completely and then add another coat. Allow to dry. Wash before use.
Its so shiny and pretty!!! I’ve used this mug quite a bit over the past week and washed it a bunch too. The clear coat is working perfectly to maintain the antiqued mercury glass effect on this mug! I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out!
What do you think of my new Antiqued Mercury Glass Effect Mug?

Can you use it in the microwave? I’m assuming the answer is no, but just thought I’d ask!

I haven’t tried it in the microwave, but I’m gonna say no… just to be safe!

Is this dishwasher safe? If it is , I’d like to do this with multiple mugs.
Thanks!

I haven’t tried my mug in a dishwasher so I can’t say that it is. I’d recommend hand washing.
