Spring is a time of new life and new opportunity, so there’s no better time to spruce up your home interior! If you’re stuck for ideas on how to add that designer feel to your home, here’s a look at the big home fashion trends of spring 2014:
Asian influences
Taking a leaf from the Eastern-inspired fabrics of the womens wear catwalks this spring, Asian patterns will be making their way into homes too. Asian themed textiles on curtains and rugs as well as luxurious patterned pillowcases and ornate lamps and silk/paper lanterns. Tropical looking floral prints are all part of this too, with bright topiary inspired upholstery a favorite, featuring over-sized flowers and leaves as opposed to a traditional ditsy print. Ideal for the living room or bedroom to give a sophisticated and exotic feel.
Geometric monochrome
You wouldn’t instantly think of black and white as Spring shades, but this year monochrome is an unmissable décor trend, particularly when mixed with bold geometric styling. This look is the perfect way to create a simple interior statement in your home. Try a sleek black coffee table with geometric runner or elegant white pillar candles or add a splash of the monochrome trend with vases, throws, cushions or blinds. Black and white works especially well if you have the contrast of a beautiful bright garden that can be seen out of your windows or French patio doors. If you’re feeling really brave, consider a black and white patterned feature wall.
Industrial vibes
This year another look filling home design magazines is the contemporary industrial look. What this means is metal, wood and stone textures with raw finishes and earthy tones also popular. Consider wooden furniture, floor boards and ornaments as well as stone fireplaces and tiles, metal tables, cabinets and pendant lamps.
Color definition
Whilst B&W is big this spring, that doesn’t mean those who love bright color will miss out. Color definition is also on style. Forget subtle ombre blends, this season it’s about distinct color boundaries between one color and another, with plenty of bright color blocking and a focus on digital print inspired differentiation between tones. Think of a paint color chart and how the different shades are separated, however subtle.
Playful and curious
Wondering what one of this springs most fun décor trends is? Try your hand at ‘curious’ interiors by playing around with what’s usually expected. Thing abstract art designs from the 50s with geometric shapes in pastels and primary colors scattered around your home, perhaps even creeping from wall to ceiling. Who says paint has to finish at the top of your walls? As part of the playful and curious vibe, you have fun with DIY and eco warrior looks. Lots of bright wools, weaves, felt and repurposed materials. Think knitted tea cosies and melamine bowls.
I have to admit, I’m desperate to make over my house… these amazing spring trends are only making the cravings worse! I tend to lean towards the industrial and playful trends. One of these days, I’ll get to have a house that would make sense to redecorate! One with out massive amounts of wood paneling 😉
Which of these trends appeals to you the most?

I am forever adding something or taking something away in our house. I have a furniture graveyard on the back porch of projects that need to be finished. 🙂

Since we live in a very urban place I love the industrial vibes!

I love the industrial thing, but sadly my house is far too traditionally designed for it to look like it belongs. If/when we built our next house, I'm going to plan a lot more than I did with this one!

Oooh, I’m totally with you on the playful curious and the industrial! love those! I recently did a guest room in my house and used the monochromatic idea, but not with the geometrics. I’m glad I found your blog, I’lldefinitely be back!

I am definitley in need of a makeover, but my kids destroy anything nice that I have, so I think I need to wait for them to grow up a little.

I can't even get any decor, let alone update it for trends! Maybe in retirement…

I never feel like I am up to date on home decor, so this is very helpful- thanks! I really like the Industrial Vibe, but I think I would be happiest surrounded by Playful and Curious. 🙂

Oh my gosh… I feel like such a loser because I had no idea that there were home decor "trends" like there are for makeup and fashion, haha. Shows you how much I pay attention. I LOVE all of these, though!!
