Every once in a while I get an idea for some Hoop Art that I think could be cool… and then I get started on it and its AMAZING, but it takes a LOT longer than I anticipated… so I procrastinate on it. THIS IS NOT THAT! 🙂 When I came up with this Ombre French Knot Ampersand Hoop Art, I got excited! So excited that I put aside every other project and thing on my to do list to work on this prettiness until it was done!
A few hours later… well more realistically, about 6 hours later, this Ombre French Knot Ampersand Hoop Art was finished and I was in LOVE.
6 different colors of threads, thousands and thousands of french knots (quite possibly only hundreds and hundreds if we’re being honest), needle-into-finger pokes, a few cuss words and all the warm fuzzies went into the making of this one of a kind piece of art.
If you follow me on instagram or snapchat, you will have already seen this finished beauty, but I felt it was worth taking the time to share with y’all as well!
Want to make your own? Its a pretty simple project… just a little time consuming!
You’ll need
6 or 7 shades of embroidery thread
Embroidery Needle
Scissors
Fabric and Batting
Embroidery Hoop
& Template
Fabric Pen/Pencil
Hot Glue
Step #1. Make your “&” template. To do this I just went into picmonkey.com and used the design option to add a “&” to a white square. I made it as big as I could and then printed if off full size. Turned out about 6 inches tall.
Step #2. Transfer the template to your fabric. Make sure you use a fabric pen or pencil so you can remover any visible parts later. I used a light box, but you can use a window too! Simply trace around the edges, giving you the shape, and empty space to be filled with french knots!
Step #3. Layer your fabric (with template) and batting into your embroidery hoop. Pull the fabric tight and cinch the outer ring of the embroider hoop to hold it all in place.
Step #4. Decide what order your threads will go in thread your embroidery needle with the first thread.
Step #5. ALL THE FRENCH KNOTS! Go to town adding in your french knots! I changed colors about every inch, purposefully leaving an imperfect edge so the thread colors sort of blended into each other.
Step #6. Fill the whole shape with french knots and finish off your work by sealing your fabric into the hoop with the hot glue.
Put it on the wall and admire your fabulous art work!

Love this so much Jennifer. So funny how am seeing more embroidery on blogs, sure love your ombre ampersand, inspiring me to get floss, hoop and needles out, get busy. Maybe would keep me from cookie jar. Am going to get floss out to plan colors for ombre effect, hope mine will be as pretty. Have metal ambersand can use for template.
Think had better practice my knots first, been long time since I embroidered anything. My arthritic hands don’t work too well so will be good therapy for them. Had to quit crocheting few years ago due to hands going numb, loved crocheting but got too painful, have arthritis in fingers and wrists also. See how much fun getting older is? Too bad getting older isn’t a choice we have.
