A little over a year ago I wrote my 30 before 30 list. On that list was Crochet an afghan for me/to keep… well I’ve finally finished! It took me almost a year to really get started on it, but its done and its all mine! π I picked the colors and bought the yarn ages ago, played around with the placement of the squares and agonized over the size. Now its finished and I plan to spend all winter snuggled up under it π I simply love my Ocean Tides Granny Square Afghan!
I’ve know how to make granny squares for a long as I can remember. I think it was the first actual thing my Nana taught me to make after I learned the basics of crocheting. It is still one of my favorite things to create, although I don’t do it often.
The afghan used 14 squares in each color. Each square is 5 rows around using a 6.5 mm hook.
I joined the squares using a new to me technique, the flat braid join. I learned how to do it using this video tutorial.
I finished the afghan off with full rounds of granny stitches around the edge in grey, soft green, mint, and teal. And I’m totally in LOVE! π
If you need me anytime between now and next spring, I’ll be on the couch, cuddled up under this little beauty π
Do you have a favorite blanket or afghan you like to snuggle under when the weather gets cool?
That is GORGEOUS!
π Thanks. I quite like it myself!
Very Pretty!..Thanks for sharing how to put the squares together!! I am working on an Afghan for my daughter..now I can finish it!! Thanks again!! Barbara
Hurray! I love video tutorials π I have the hardest time reading patterns.
Beautiful afghan. Inspired me to make an ocean themed afghan for my daughter.
This is so pretty – I love the colors!
π Thanks muchly!
So pretty! You have much more patience than I!
There is a reason it took me a long time! LOL I had half the granny squares done for at least 6 months before I started working on it again LOL
Did you teach yourself how to do this? I want to learn! Teach me your ways!
This is gorgeous!
Thanks π
Love it! And I love that join you used!
That is pretty! I wish I could do something like that. You can defiantly use it spring for a picnic.
That looks great! As crafty as I am, I just can't seem to crochet, I start to zone out and by the time I know it all my loops are uneven and my squares start to look like triangles. Haha. Although as a small child, my favorite blanket was a super soft pink & raspberry colored blanket that my mom crocheted for me, it went missing over the years but I loved that blanket. Nowadays, I just steal my boyfriend's sweaters.
Oh, that's gorgeous!!
π thanks! Kinda think so myself ! Hehe
Such beautiful blue colors! π
So pretty! Great color combo, and cute pattern! Isn't it such a great feeling to finish something like this? I know you'll enjoy it for a very long time!
WOW it is beautiful!! You are amazing!!!
Thanks Katie π

Thank you Helen! I appreciate the complement! And you taking the time to check out my creations π
I just found you on Pinterest. Love this blanket! Could you please share the yarn used and the colors? I’m wanting to make a king size for my bed. Thank you so much and Merry Christmas!
Hi Sandy!
I used Regular redheart yarn that I picked up at walmart. I don’t remember the exact color names, but there is a mint green, aqua/turquoise, teal, navy and grey colored yarns. I wish ai could tell you the exact names. Sorry!
I’ve been crocheting for more than 30 years and I still love the simplicity of the granny square. It’s such a nice way to show off color combos and yours is lovely π
do you have the pattern? I’d love to make this!
Hi Brooke! There’s no “official” pattern. The squares are a basic granny square. I included a video link to the joining method I used in the post. I like crocheting things that I can whip up quickly, which is why I like granny square projects like this one π
