First, lets start with your vehicle. If you ensure your vehicle is up to date with its maintenance then you will prevent a very expensive disaster. Take your vehicle to your local dealership for a tune up and inspection. Ask them to top up your fluids, check pressures and make sure you’re ready to hit the road!

A few items to put in the vehicle for both ease of the trip and being prepared for the unexpected things that life has to offer. A general purpose firstaid kit should be sufficient for most injuries that can occur on any given day. Snacks and sanitary napkins help to get through the long stretches between meals. If everyone has a different mood about the music in the car then an ipod or cd player is a must. Small electronic games or an ebook reader also helps to pass the time on the road.

While part of the adventure of a road trip is unexpected encounters it is important to have some sort of plan. Bring a map or gps system to avoid getting totally lost. This can be useful in remote areas that have extreme distances between them. In some of these areas there can be two hundred miles between towns. Some are courteous enough to to put up signs that warn you that there are no gas stations for the next two hundred miles and they are very serious. Take time to look at maps of the area that you are traveling to know what to expect while traveling in any given area. Keep a cell phone just in case you need any assistance on any issues that crop up.
