Marriage is such a huge step, you’re promising to be faithful to one person for the rest of your life. If you don’t pick the right person and things end badly, you’ll be stuck going through a divorce which so emotionally and financially draining. But how can you know for sure whether you’re actually marrying the right person and whether you’re still going to be happy with them decades from now?
The truth is, you can never be completely certain and there’s always the chance that things will change in the future, but as long as you consider your decision carefully, you can be almost sure that you’re marrying the right person. These are some of the things that you should consider before taking the plunge.
Why Now?
This is an important question to ask yourself because often, people decide to get married because they’ve been together for a certain period of time. They think, we’ve been a couple for 3 years now, the logical thing to do is to get married. But love is never that simple and everybody’s story is different.
Some people are together for decades before they eventually decide that they want to get married, while some people meet and have a whirlwind relationship that ends in a proposal a few months later. There is no formula for when you should get married, you should be doing it because you both feel ready to take that next step.
If you’re getting married for any other reason like pressure from your family or just because you think that it’s expected, you might not be making the right decision.
What Are Your Goals?
Your individual goals in life are something that you really need to think about when you get married because if they don’t line up with your partner, you’re going to run into trouble later on in life.
For example, if it’s always been your dream to move to another country and your partner doesn’t share that goal, one of you is going to have to make a compromise and that will lead to resentment. That doesn’t mean that you can’t have your own separate lives with your own goals and aspirations, but it’s also important that those goals aren’t directly in conflict with your partner.
Are Your Zodiac Signs Compatible?
Not everybody believes in astrology but if you do, it’s important that you know whether your zodiac sign is compatible with your partner. Looking at your zodiac compatibility can give you a better indication of whether your relationship will last for life.
A lot of people that aren’t very compatible might still have a short term relationship, but they won’t be able to survive a marriage because their differences will start to show after a while and things will break down.
Do You Communicate?
Marriage isn’t like a fairytale where you meet the love of your life and everything is perfect. It’s something that you have to work at together if you want it to be successful. There are always going to be things that you disagree on, which is fine, as long as you can work through those issues together.
That’s why communication is so important in a marriage. Think about how you and your partner normally deal with disagreements. Do you just shout at each other and have a big argument, then wait for the dust to settle and move on? Often, couples do this and they’re not actually resolving the underlying issue, they’re just pushing it to the side and it will come up again in the future.
The couples that last through a marriage are the ones that will sit down together and discuss how to get around that problem. You’ve got to remember that an argument is you against your partner, it should be both of you against the problem.
If you find that you’re not communicating well, you should try to address that before you decide to get married.
Do You Have Trust?
Trust is the foundation of any good marriage and if it’s not there, the cracks will eventually start to show. Things like checking your partner’s phone or being suspicious about them when they go out without you are all red flags. If you don’t trust one another 100 percent, you should reconsider marriage until you can work on that.
While it’s impossible to know for sure whether you’re ready for marriage, you should consider these questions. They will help you to review the state of your relationship and decide whether getting married is right for you.
