I’ve always loved making gifts to give to friends and family, especially during the holidays. Its a habit/tradition that I learned from my Nana and Mom. And Christmas just isn’t Christmas unless I’ve spent some time making some handmade goodies! This Holiday Mug Rug and Coffee Mug Gift Idea has been an idea in the back of my mind for a few weeks now and I finally had time to sit down and whip it up!
I’m so thrilled with the way my little Holiday Mug Rug came together. In fact I loved it so much that I had to make a second one… that way I have one to give and one to keep! Cause helloooo! This thing is CUTE!
To make these Holiday Mug Rugs, I used the same quilt as you go technique as these scrappy coasters, only adding the pieces in a straight line and a slightly bigger size of 5.5 inches. Then I trimmed them on the diagonal. On the pack I stitched a metallic gold heart on top of the plaid. So these pretty little Holiday Mug Rug is double sided!
I also did a traditional binding… mostly cause I was in the mood for some hand stitching, but also because I liked the way it looked finished.
Then all I needed to do was paint these adorable little trays that Oriental Trading sent me to get creative with. I went with an off white chalkboard paint and they’re perfect! The mug rugs fit inside of them perfectly. Paired with a cute coffee mug, this becomes the perfect gift for the tea or coffee lover in your life!
I got to send off one of these fun little holiday mug rugs and polka dot mug as part of a Christmas gift exchange. I’m hoping that my partner loved it!

Such a cute idea! And great name too for this post. I haven’t heard the term “mug rug” before, but it makes me happy that’s a thing, lol.

I have so many little tiny scrappy bis of fabric, including quite a few festive bits. I love the idea of making them into Mug Rugs, thanks.

That should say ‘bits’ obviously. I hate the way I see typos after I hit post comment instead of before!
