When it comes to friends, and special events like Birthdays… I can kinda suck. As in sometimes I don’t remember or totally blank on sending a gift on time. Like I said I suck. But when I do come through, I try to make up for my suck-y-ness with handmade awesomeness. Such is the case with this quilt! Taylor from Pink Heels Pink Truck is one of my bestest friends in the entire world. And since she is my bestest friend, I wanted to send her something epic for her birthday in April. Yeah… last April. But I’m getting ahead of my self ๐
March 2014… Taylor’s birthday was rapidly approaching, I was fishing for ideas on what to get for her, but she wasn’t much help. (LOL) She did mention wanting a new make up bag, so I thought about making her one… I turned to etsy to find the perfect fabric! On a whim I searched for Pink Truck Fabric. Guess what??? THERE IS PINK TRUCK FABRIC! Well, that got my brain to spinning… Maybe there was High Heel fabric? Guess What??? THERE WAS FREAKING HIGH HEEL FABRIC!!!!
In that moment Taylors High Heels and Pink Trucks Quilt was born! Of course, once I had the fabric in my hands, I had to decide on a quilt pattern. I wanted something that would still show off the fabric in all its glory. It took a lot of Hmmmm-ing and Haaaa-ing but I finally decided on a basic patchwork pattern with 6 inch squares.
At this point I had already missed Taylors birthday. Opps! I told her I was working on something… but OOPPS!!! *Bad Friend Alert*
Knowing that I’d need a quilt design wall to get the fabric placement just right, I popped into an open retreat at Sunset Quilt Retreat for a day and went to town! In 7 hours I had the top pieced and ready for quilting! I talked a little bit about that day, but I couldn’t share much since the bulk of my time was spent on Taylors quilt! And Pink Trucks?? that might have been a dead giveaway!
A couple weeks later, I had a chance to get it quilted. I was planning on getting it in the mail by October… for her half birthday? Lameeee… The longer I thought about it, the more I wanted to see her expression when she opened it! Soooooo…. I waited a couple more weeks, hand stitched the binding and packaged it up all pretty ๐ Half birthday wrapping paper, half Christmas paper. At this point it became her Birthday AND Christmas gift. I’m cool like that ๐
Now its November and time for the #TXWB Farm to Table dinner in Dallas. I headed in early with a friend to help set up AND to give FINALLY give the girl her birthday present! And let me tell you… it was totally worth the wait to see her expression!
I managed to capture this with my cell. This is the moment that she realized her quilt was made of pink truck and high heel fabric! Like I said, worth the wait! *for me at least*
I’m pretty sure this High Heels and Pink Trucks Quilt was a hit with my bestie!
Have you ever royally failed at gift giving? Please tell me I am not the only one! ๐

I love seeing quilt-y goodness. It just makes me smile. Oh, and I am also fairly lame at birthdays…like I'm not sure when anyone's birthday is because I truly suck and remembering dates. You are definitely not alone on that one.
