Heading out on a road trip or anticipating a significant amount of time spent in the car? These free travel games will come in handy!

During summer vacation, countless families all over the world go on road trips. These trips allow for cheaper vacations (no airfare) and the ability to see the many sites on the way to your destination. Unfortunately, the long hours of driving may make some of the family members sleepy, cranky, or just plain bored.

Luckily, there are a variety of games you can play during the driving time between destinations!

Here are the top free travel games picked for being easy to do, exciting, and fun:

The Animal Game

This word game is extremely easy to start and keep playing, and will allow for out of the box thinking for the kids. To play, the first player simply names an animal, let’s say “duck”. The next player then has to name an animal whose name starts with the letter that the previous animal’s name ended with. Since “duck” ends in a “k”, the next player would have to choose an animal like “kangaroo” and so on. It is a very entertaining game that can take up long periods of time.

Geocaching

Geocaching is a super high tech treasure hunting game that thousands of people participate in around the country. To do it, you will need a handheld GPS. To play, you will use your GPS to get you close to an area. You then search that area to find a “geocache”. Geocaches can be anywhere, and are often tucked into places that hundreds of people walk by every day, without even knowing it.

The Alphabet Game

The alphabet game is a game where you have to try and go through the alphabet using only letters from signs and license plates. It is a fun game that the whole family can play together, and work as a team to solve.

The Never Ending Story

In this game, the first player says a sentence. Then, in order, the next players say another sentence, and it goes around and around with everybody adding to the story (this can also be done using individual words). The stories get crazy and funny when playing this game and it is sure to be a good laugh for everybody.

Sing Along

While this game may not be right for some families, other would love to spend the road trip singing along to the radio. This can be very fun and it is a good idea to try it out with your family. You can use the radio, CDs, or mp3 players to choose the songs to sing along to.

The Licence Plate Game

I shared a free printable for this fun game recently! You’ll need to print off the game sheet, grab a couple of clipboards, and bring along some pencils or crayons! Get the details over on THIS POST.

And a friendly little reminder from someone that has had this issue in the past: avoid car troubles by taking your vehicle to your local dealership for a tune up before hitting the road! Making sure everything is in good working order, your fluids are topped up, and your vehicle is ready to go provides so much peace of mind as you hit the hiways!

In the end, having fun during a road trip is all about using your imagination. Turn boring times into fun times with these free travel games!
