Computer Games During Lockdown: More Than Just Entertainment

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when people couldn’t go outside without an emergency, games where players could meet up and hang out became very popular. One prime example of such a game is Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which was released on the Nintendo Switch. It allowed people who were locked in their homes to feel free to explore a coronavirus-free world. In Animal Crossing, players can participate in a variety of activities, from fishing to playing musical instruments. Some gamers have even had in-game play dates.

As restaurants, bars, entertainment centers, and other venues were closed in many countries around the world, people were looking for creative ways to keep themselves socially active. Because of this, game sales grew by 40-60%, and mostly those that allowed people to interact in a gaming space. Gamers began to spend much more time in virtual worlds than before.

The demand for gambling during the pandemic also increased. Experts explain this by the fact that people need exciting emotions, and gambling entertainment may well provide such emotions. On top of that, they can be easily accessed—you just need to register at online casinos. The choice of the latter is quite wide, for example, there are Melbet, Mostbet, and 1win. However, Melbet stands out in terms of bonuses and game assortment. To start playing, you just need to go through Melbet registration and fund your account. Then, you can get full access to the entire range of games.

Games not only give you the opportunity to contact your friends when you can’t see them physically—they are whole alternative universes that allow you to forget about reality. Of course, this does not apply to gambling, but there are computer games that offer such an opportunity. Today, players can choose to play one of the giant world games for online meetings because there are hundreds of them. They give people the social content they need. For example, Eve Online has almost 8 thousand star systems and the opportunity for players to not only fight but also cooperate.

Socializing in computer games helps people fulfill basic psychological needs, while the outside world has many limitations. One of these needs is socialization, but games also offer a sense of control and the ability to choose what to do. They are not a perfect substitute for face-to-face meetings, but they offer some respite. It’s also important to keep track of time spent behind smartphone and tablet screens.

In addition, COVID-19 has robbed many people of a sense of control over their surroundings, and computer games can restore that feeling. Of course, they are not a panacea and are not available to everyone, but they are still a good solution.
