Over the last couple of decades, car ownership around the world has gone up by a huge margin. With these machines getting cheaper and more accessible, today’s roads are packed with over a billion of the things, and this is having a huge impact on the world. For those that decide to live carless, life can be a real challenge, though, making it hard to justify making this lifestyle choice. To help you out with this, this post will be exploring some of the different methods which can be used to give you a leg-up when you’re living without an automobile.
To begin, it’s always good to give yourself a reason for this sort of action. In the case of cars, the planet is the biggest concern most people will have, with motors contributing to over a quarter of the greenhouse gas emissions in the US alone each year. Of course, while electric cars promise to help with this, they are still very expensive, and far out of reach of a lot of normal people. Thankfully, along with your own vehicle, there are plenty of ways to get around when you don’t have access to a car. This makes it easy to take this leap once you know where to look.
Getting Around: Normal day to day life is the area which not having a car will impact the most. When you’re used to driving to work each day, it can be hard to find yourself without this resource anymore. Busses and train links are very good in most modern cities, though. These services are very affordable, often costing a lot less each year than the car you drive, while also letting you rest assured that you’re not damaging the Earth.
Moving Something Large: On occasion, though, you might have to move something which is too large to go on a bus or a train. When you’re moving home, have bought some furniture, or simply have some jobs to do, a car can come in very handy. At the same time, though, a man and van service won’t cost very much at all. Instead, by using a service like this, you will not only save money, but will often save time, as well.
When You’re In A Rush: Finally, as the last area to consider, there will also be times when you don’t have very much time at all to get to your destination. To solve this issue, companies like Uber have started working in most major cities, offering the ability to call a taxi at your whim. In some places, you can find a driver in a matter of minutes, making it significantly easier to avoid missing that important meeting or the flight which is due to take you on vacation.
Hopefully, with all of this in mind, you will feel much better about the idea of abandoning your car. Living this way doesn’t have to be too hard, and most people find that it can be quite refreshing after a year or two of it. Of course, though, you will still have to work hard, as this is almost always a feature of helping the environment.
