6 Highly Underrated Vacationing Activities

This post may contain affiliate or brand partner links. Read our full disclosure here.

If you were asked about the most common vacationing activities most people get up to, how would you respond? Some of them are a little obvious and play into the general stereotypes we have about what a vacation is – for example, relaxing on a beach, reading an airport thriller, enjoying new restaurants, trying the bar scene, enjoying a hotel pool, walking and shopping in the local space.

But of course, a vacation is really just an experience you have somewhere new, where you don’t live in the course of your regular day to day living arrangement. All the options you have in normal life are available to you, they don’t have to be limited as “vacation activities.”

So, are there less common but enjoyable vacationing activities to enjoy? We believe so. Let’s consider some of the most underrated, below:

Crabbing & Fishing

Crabbing and fishing can offer a really good time on vacation. Being out on the water with as simple rod or line and learning local techniques is a blast, and you might even cook your catch. Just make sure you have the right temporary license if you need one, because from there you can connect with the area and its traditions. It’s pretty relaxing once you get the hang of it.

Local Markets

Local markets can offer a better deal than high street shopping and can even be seen as little treasure troves. You’ll find knick-knacks you’d never see in regular stores. Depending on the market that could involve anything from fresh produce, handmade crafts, memorabilia and thrifted fashion – it’s quite literally all there. It’s also a good place to chat with locals and get a feel for the area. Why not find accommodation right on that doorstep, such as in hotels near West Side Market?

Hiking

Hiking lets you see parts of a place most tourists miss, and it doesn’t even have to be super intense – a small, short trail can still show you some amazing views. This practice is a good way to get some exercise and fresh air while you’re on vacation and to see a common nature trail or even walk through a city outskirts. Moreover, you’ll often end up at spots that feel really special, like you’ve discovered them yourself, even if that’s just a hidden park cafe.

Bridge Walks

Bridge walks are often overlooked, but they can be pretty excting. You get great views of the city or landscape, and you’ll be led up by a professional guide so you don’t have to worry.

Local Folk Shows

Folk shows give you a peek into the local culture – although of course you can switch out the genre depending on the space you’re in, such as jazz or classical. These shows are often more authentic than the big tourist productions, sort of like the authenticity of street food but for art.. You might not understand everything, but the energy and skill of the performers usually comes through. It’s a fun way to spend an evening if you have nothing else planned.

Slow River Kayaks

Kayaking down a slow river tends to be deeply peaceful. You get to see the landscape from a different angle, and maybe spot some wildlife at the same time. It’s not as tough as whitewater rafting, so pretty much anyone can do it with a friend. If you’re tired of walking, you still get to travel while seated, so it’s the best of both worlds too.

With this advice, you’re sure to enjoy some highly underrated vacationing activities. Have fun!
