Many people don’t give a second thought to the battery in their car, until it goes bad. Before your battery even goes bad, you should get it tested. A bad battery could make the difference between being stranded on a cold winter day or making it to your destination without interruption. If you’re looking for reasons to get your battery tested, here are a few reasons.

Leaks and Corrosions Exist

It’s possible for the battery in your vehicle to experience leaks and corrosions. While it can be hard for the normal eye to see if there is a leak in a battery, it’s quite common for a car service professional to be able to detect corrosion or leaks.

Cold weather + Bad Battery = Bad News

Yikes, those are a few words that no one wants to hear. Cold weather means your car battery will have to work a whole lot harder. This is why it’s recommended you get your battery tested before winter hits. Especially, if you think that your battery is bad. Cold weather and a bad battery don’t mix.

Hot Weather + Bad Battery = Bad News

When people think of a bad battery, they often think of cold weather, but batteries can go bad in hot weather too. Hot weather can make your battery corrode even more. It can also make evaporate battery acid, to where it won’t leave anything left. Hot weather also has the potential to to keep your battery from charging and eventually lose voltage.

How often should I have my battery checked?

If we’re being honest, a battery should be checked twice a year. Although this may seem excessive, it’s not. Bad batteries can exist in good cars and bad cars, which is why they need checked so much.

A car professional would suggest that you get your battery checked at least twice a year.

* Get your battery checked in the spring

* Get your battery in the fall

Both of these battery checks are right before hot or cold weather hits. Since hot or cold weather can make a bad battery worse, it makes sense to check it during these times.

Even if you only suspect that you have a bad battery, it makes sense to have it checked. You can sometimes get your battery checked for free. However, the next time your car serviced, make sure you ask them to check your battery. The right car dealership may even include it in the service they provide.
