Valentine’s Day can be especially fun when you’ve been dating your sweetie for only a short length of time. Long distance relationships can be rewarding when you can both travel back and forth together. But Valentine’s Day is coming up and you’ve both decided that traveling this month isn’t an option. Even though it’s Valentine’s Day, you and your loved one still want to celebrate. But when they live miles away, how can you spend the time together?
With a bit of creativity, there are many ideas that will help long distance couples to celebrate Valentine’s Day together.
- Long distance phone calls can be costly, which is why the Skype service was created. It’s a free service, and you can connect with your loved one online. Even better, there is a video chat, so you don’t need to just spend time typing messages back and forth, such as in Facebook Messenger. Set up Skype in advance of your date, as often it takes more than a few minutes to get set up by the time you decide which email account and user name to use. Once you’re both set up, you can have a “real” date on Skype. Be sure to bring food and drink, and dress up!
- This will take some advance preparation, but you can both plan on writing love letters to each other. Set a word length, and then mail the finished letters to each other in plenty of time. You may wish to write a draft letter, and then copy it onto good stationery. Keep a copy for yourself, as not only will you be opening their letter on Skype or over the telephone, but you will also read the letters you wrote for each other out loud. The mailed copy is so that you both have a souvenir of the event for later.
- There are many free online websites where you can send a Valentine’s Day greeting card. These cards were super popular in the early 00’s, but seem to be making a comeback. The newer versions of these online cards often have animation and sounds. You can even add your lover’s photo to make it appear that they’re really dancing. Remember, if you’re sending one to their workplace to keep it clean!
- If you decide to connect via Skype or an online video messenger service, playing a game online will be fun. To get around the need for the actual board game, stick to trivia. Choose a theme in advance so you can each choose questions, and find the correct answers. Don’t make the game too long, as it can become tedious when you’re in front of the computer. And don’t bother keeping score—it’s just for fun!
You can still hang out and celebrate Valentine’s Day together, it just may be through the telephone, email, messenger, or Skype system. Either way, you’ll both have fun and have memories to share on your next Valentine’s Day together.
