101 Handmade Days: DIY Change Jar

This post may contain affiliate or brand partner links. Read our full disclosure here.

My husband is NOTORIOUS for throwing his jeans on the laundry pile without checking his pockets… and if I don’t check them, the changes ends up going through the wash. Fortunately I’ve never accidentally washed anything really important, but we both need to get better at checking our pockets! This handy-dandy DIY change jar is the perfect reminder!

Supplies:

  • Mason Jar
  • Pallet Wood
  • 3-4” Metal Hose Clamp
  • Paint Pen or Paint and Paint Brush
  • Cordless Drill/Driver
  • 3 Small Screws
  • Twine

Instructions:

Begin by cutting a piece of pallet wood approximately 8” tall.  You can use new wood or barn wood depending on the look you want.  I wanted mine a bit rustic so used weathered pallet wood.

Sketch the word “CHANGE” onto the piece of wood to make sure your location and spacing is just right.  Use a paint pen or small paint brush to paint the word.  Allow the paint to dry completely before continuing.

Once your paint is completely dry use the cordless drill/driver to attach the hose clamp with a small screw.

Add an additional screw to each side of the wood towards the top.  This is where you’ll tie the twine f or hanging.

Slip the mason jar into the hose clamp and use a screw driver to tighten the clamp until it is tight around the neck of the jar.

Cut a piece of twine to about 15”.  Tie one end around each screw on the sides of the board.

Slip the twine over a nail or hook and hand your DIY Change Jar in the laundry room, entry way, or any place you find yourself constantly picking up loose change!

My DIY change jar is definitely going in the laundry room!
