Sausage Gravy and Biscuits

This post may contain affiliate or brand partner links. Read our full disclosure here.

Would you believe that before I moved to Texas, I had never had sausage gravy and biscuits before?!?! My husband couldn’t believe it! And I had no idea that sausage gravy and biscuits for breakfast was such a common thing down here in the south. It took a few tries (and more than a few failures) before my husband declared that I had mastered the recipe he liked, but now I’m a whiz at whipping up his favorite breakfast!

The hubby's favorite breakfast! Sausage Gravy and Biscuits Recipe on BusyBeingJennifer.com

Homemade Biscuit Ingredients:

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

4-6 tablespoons cold butter

1 cup milk

Directions:

Combine flour, baking powder and salt.  Using a fork, cut in the butter until well incorporated with flour.  Add milk and stir together a few times until the dough comes away from the sides of the bowl.  Drop spoonfuls of dough onto a baking sheet or muffin pan.  Bake in a 450 degree oven for 12-14 minutes.
Homemade Sausage Gravy Ingredients:

8 ounces breakfast sausage

2 tablespoons all purpose flour

2 cups milk

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon pepper

Directions:

Brown sausage in a large skillet, crumbling up the meat as you go.  When the sausage is finished cooking, remove from the pan and set aside in a bowl. Reserve 2 tablespoons of grease for gravy.  Drain the rest.

Over medium-low heat, mix together flour with reserved grease until well combined.  Slowly add in the milk while stirring constantly.  Turn to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes while whisking the gravy.  Add in seasonings and serve.

This is such a “normal” thing for breakfast, here in the south, that even McDonald’s offers it on their breakfast menu! The truth is though, that this makes a great , brunch, lunch, or dinner option too!

Have you ever tried sausage gravy and biscuits before? If you haven’t, you definitely should! My husbands obsession with this southern breakfast tradition has definitely gotten me hooked!
