It Is Well With My Soul Farmhouse Pillow + Free Pattern

It Is Well With My Soul by Horatio G. Spafford is one of my all time favorite hymns. I vividly remember as a child singing this at church with my Nana. At the time she was battling cancer, but she belted out this song with all her might. And I knew that it was indeed, well with her soul, despite her current battle.

Do you know the story behind this hymn? Its quite a tale, a sad one, but triumphant in its own way. You can read all about it here if you want. Horatio G. Spafford went through an incredibly trying time in his life, almost akin to what the biblical character Job faced. He lost his son to illness, his property to fire and corruption, and then his daughters all perished when their ship sank on its way to England. Tragedy upon tragedy.

Despite it all, he never lost his faith in god, and penned these immortal words while crossing to England to rejoin his wife after the tragic loss of his daughters.

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say,
It is well, it is well with my soul.

And that is the inspiration behind this hand stitched “It Is Well With My Soul Farmhouse Pillow”. Part homage to the strength of my Nana, and part homage to the impact that these words have had on me. And ALL love for the hymn and words that have helped me face dark times, and keep my smile on my face.

    This is a great word to hold on to. Growing up in the church I heard this saying all the time. It wasn’t until I was older that I began to understand what it meant.
