Homemade Mold and Mildew Cleaner

This post may contain affiliate or brand partner links. Read our full disclosure here.

Now that I’ve been making my own laundry soap, I wanted to try my hand at making some other all natural options, starting with the bathroom and this Homemade Mold and Mildew Cleaner!

It makes cleaning the shower SO much easier and I LOVE that its harmful checmical free and uses essential oils I already have in my home. In fact tea tree oil is one of the everyday essential oils we use most often around here!

Homemade Mold & Mildew Cleaner

We love tea tree oil because its an inexpensive and natural alternative to harsh chemical-based disinfectant, as well as so many others things! This Homemade Mold and Mildew Cleaner has my shower sparkly clean, disinfected and smelling great in just a few minutes!

If you’re all in for making some DIY bathroom cleaner yourself, but don’t have the time right now to grab your bottles and start mixing, go ahead and pin this to your favorite DIY’s board on Pinterest, so you can find it again fast when you’re ready!

Now, on to the recipe!

DIY Mildew Remover Ingredients:

  • 1 Glass Bottle
  • 2 Cups Filtered Water
  • 2 Tsp Tea Tree Oil
  • ¼ Cup Baking Soda

As with other cleaning products, don’t ever combine things like hydrogen peroxide or straight vinegar…those things might work to clean mold, but combining things like that is like asking for a bad chemical burn. So, stay away from mixing cleaning materials you’re not certain will work together.

This is honestly one of the easiest homemade mildew cleaners you’ll find and so gentle, you can use 1/2 cup of this cleaning water in a spray bottle to keep in the shower to spray after you bathe to keep mold stains from ever happening.

So much more efficient than scrubbing with chlorine bleach or vinegar and water six months later.

Plus, you can use this without feeling like you need to wear a mask or immediately run out of your shower. Seriously–I just hate that feeling like my lungs are filling with bleach–yeck.

DIY Mildew Cleaning Recipe Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl, pour 1 cup water.
  2. Add ¼ cup baking soda.  Stir.
  3. Mix in 2 tsp tea tree oil.
  4. Stir well.
  5. Using a funnel, pour into a clean spray bottle.  You will have some baking soda left in the bowl that settled.  That’s ok!
  6. In your bowl, pour in your last 1 cup of water and mix the settled baking soda.  Funnel into your bottle.
  7. Print out a free cleaning label and attach! (We use our sticker maker ALL the time!  It has come in super handy!)

To use this Homemade Mold and Mildew Cleaner, spray it in your shower or on your shower curtain, let it sit for a few minutes and then wipe it down. The baking soda will help absorb moisture while tea tree oil is a natural anti-fungal agents.  If you already have mold growing, replace the water with vinegar to help kill the mold fast for a natural solution!

There are, quite literally, hundreds of ways to use tea tree oil and this is one of my favorite practical methods! I’ve got more practical essential oil ideas like this in the works and hope to share them with you soon 🙂

Be sure to pin this to your favorite DIY home care board on Pinterest so you can find it again when you need to make a new batch!

I’m not sure about the benefits of jasmine oil, but tea tree oil has a lot of benefits and a purpose in this recipe. As for the vinegar, I’m sure it would clean ok, but I’d be afraid a red vinegar would stain.
