French Knot Stag Head Pillow

This post may contain affiliate or brand partner links. Read our full disclosure here.

A few weeks ago, when my Mom was visiting, we did a BUNCH of shopping! While we were out and about I stumbled across a little project inspiration in the form of a tea towel that had some nifty large french knot embroidery on it. So my brain went to spinning, and this French Knot Stag Head Pillow was born! In my brain at least, it took a little longer to come to actual life.

This French Knot Stag Head Pillow turned out AMAZING! If you've mastered the French Knot, then you'll LOVE the uniqueness of this project! This handmade pillow would look amazing in a Farmhouse this Christmas! There are DIY details too!

But when it did, oh boy! Is this one a winner! I am totally and utterly in love this this French Knot Stag Head Pillow!!

Now this is a little bit different than my last french knot project. Instead of using regular embroidery floss, I used this Caron Simply Soft yarn! The texture and size of each french knot is practically perfection!

To get the outline of the stag head, I used a free coloring sheet I found online, used my light box and fabric pen to transfer the outline onto my fabric “farmhouse-ish” fabric. Then it was just a matter of finding an embroidery needle with a large enough eye on it to handle yarn!

A few hours later, I was in french knot heaven!

All told this French Knot Stag Head Pillow took about 6 hours of “knotting”. Along with a few curses, a band aid, squeals of excitement and several “ooohhh I like it!”s.

A few tips if you want to give this kind of project a try yourself 🙂

  • A looser woven fabric won’t “pull” as much when you bring the needle and yarn through.
  • A slightly thinker needle, that makes a larger hole, will make pulling the yarn through a little easier.
  • Use the largest embroidery hoop you have to fit the whole outline in. It can be a bit of a pain to work with, but the knots are thick and it can make shifting the fabric to work in a new area a bigger pain then the larger hoop.

This is also probably the biggest finished pillow I’ve made to date. It measures 20 by 20 is is the perfect “frame” for all those french knots! Seriously in love with this French Knot Stag Head Pillow project! I think I need to do this in a rainbow of colors too!

The PERFECT Christmas Pillow! This DIY French Knot Stag Head Pillow is Gorgeous!!

This is so cool. I especially like the design. I am fascinated by this. I’ve never thought about putting designs in the pillows it will make decorating a whole lot easier. Thanks for the inspiration.

I love this idea! It looks beautiful and I know that this would be perfect in my living room. I currently have pillows that would be better to keep out for the rest of the year but I would love to swap them out for a couple of these during the holiday season. So cute!

This turned out perfect for the winter months. Not too Christmas-y. I love that. It would be a great thing to add to our living room with our Christmas tree too.

That pillow is perfect, not too flashy and elegant! I was actually looking for some decorative pillows the other day and found that most of them were WAY too festive. I don’t care for all the glitter and gold – I prefer simple!

That looks so simple to do! I remember these french hook kits that people did in the 70’s and 80’s and they didn’t turn out nearly as cute as this one.

For some reason it doesn’t want to take my comment today. Lol. Foeey. I love the pillow. I keep joking that I change pillows so much and they get dirty from living in the country with dirt and the animals that I need to start using holiday pillow cases instead.

I am in absolute awe that you created this pillow all from a vision and dream in your mind. I’ve had my fair share of those crafty visions, and they often do not turn out near as beautiful as this! Great job!

This is SUCH a fun idea! I’m literally obsessed with how pretty this came out. This is even prettier than something you’d see in Target – I can’t take it! You need to sell these girl, because they’ll sell out in a MINUTE! …15 of which will be from me 🙂

OMG this looks amazing! I haven’t tried my hands on ‘knotting’ for years now and I think it’s time that I do. What you made is really good and now I’m inspired to make one of my own!

Don’t know that I’d get this done for this holiday season but would be great to work on for next year. You are so doggoned smart and great knotter. Good idea using yarn instead of embroidery floss, gives it so much more texture, love it.
Would you maybe consider offering the image for us? If not we’ll have to find our own. Sure glad you shared this incredible project.
    Enjoy rest of weekend

Jennifer, I haven’t done any needle work in forever! But, this looks like a great project and I may save the idea for the future. I would really like to get back into a more creative nature again. Thanks for sharing through Inspire Me Monday!
