12 Misconceptions about bloggers, Part 2 - BusyBeingJennifer.com

On Tuesday I shared 6 common misconceptions about bloggers… so far it seems that all the bloggy peeps agree. Some of the comments I got on part 1 made me laugh out loud 🙂 Husbands, In-Laws, Siblings, even complete strangers seem to be clueless about what we do!

Misconceptions- Bloggers get all kinds of -Free Stuff-

7. We get “Free” stuff all the time.

True. Kinda… Yes sometimes we get free stuff, but it’s rarely actually free. Companies send us stuff to try, test out and review. This usually includes us taking photos and writing posts… which are both time-consuming. So not only do we have to spend time on the post, at the end of the year we’re still required to pay takes on the value of the things we get. Its true when they say nothing is truly free!

8. Blogging is for Teenage Girls.

I’ll admit, I had a “blog” when I was like 17… good grief I hope I deleted it! But the reality is, Blogging has come a LONG way since I was a teenager. It’s not about keeping an online diary anymore. Now-a-days people uses blogs as a resource. Many bloggers use it as a way to share info about particular subjects and the non-bloggers come to our sites to get that info… see!! It’s definitely not about teenage diaries!

9. Bloggers Lead Perfect Lives, in Perfect Houses, with Perfect Families.

If believe that any of have life totally figured out and everything is just hunky-dory all the time, then you might be following the wrong kind of blogger. Life is far from easy or perfect. For example….

My Messy Life

If you stand in the middle of my den/office/craft room and spin around, this is what you’ll see! Hubs isn’t due home until late friday afternoon, by then things will be tidier 🙂 But I like to keep things real around here…

If you want to read about another blogger  that’s keeping it real, check out my friend Jac’s blog 🙂

10. Creativity Just Comes to Us…

It’s a myth. Creativity doesn’t just come to us. We have to work for it and sometimes its hard!! I’m constantly writing notes when I do have some creativity in me, for the days where I’ve got nothing. Sometimes I spend hours on pinterest (Lets face it that’s not exactly a chore) waiting for inspiration to strike, but even that doesn’t always work. As bloggers we are constantly under pressure to create new, exciting content. Sometimes that just doesn’t happen…

Misconceptions- Bloggers don't mind if you -borrow- their content... aka steal.

11. Bloggers don’t mind if you “borrow” their content…

Its called stealing people! If you use an image or someone else’s content without permission, its theft. No if ands or butts about it.  And believe me, us bloggers DO care! Cease and desist letters have been flying fast and heavy lately due to an increase in scrapper sites and people who claim they don’t know any better.

12. Numbers are the most important thing

Sure, we care about page views and how many facebook followers we have, but we know that there is a lot more to blogging than just the numbers. We’re building communities around the things we love and connect on.

So there you have it! 12 of the most common misconceptions people have about bloggers. If you’re a blogger, you’ll “Get it”. If you’re thinking about starting a blog, you’ll need this and if you know a blogger, this will help!

Don’t forget to read part 1!!

Bah ha ha I love the part about the perfect houses! I swear on all that is holy, if I'm taking a picture where ANY part of my house is visible, I simply PUSH all the garbage to another spot, or in a closet, or under a bed, or just put it somewhere else in general. At least, twenty years from now, when I look at these photos, I'll be able to tell my kids and grandkids that my house was spotless. Bwahahahahahahaha, put the pressure on!

My house is FAR from perfect, too!! I have five kids, and spend about 500 hours a week working on my blog (ok, I exaggerated a little, but still)…my house looks like crap unless company is coming over!

I agree with this list as well…except for the last one. I think a lot of bloggers and most companies are now focusing on numbers numbers numbers because of all the new bloggers flooding the market.
