One of my favorite Christmas traditions from when I was a child is making new ornaments! I make, at the very least, one new ornament every year! Usually its more like 5 or 6, especially since I joined the world of blogging 🙂 Its a great way to get in to the Christmas Spirit and add a personal touch to your tree. I still have some of the ornaments that I made as a kid and they bring back such great memories! This year I wanted to add my fur-baby to the tree 🙂
To make your own pet paw print snowflake ornament you’ll need …
Multi-Surface FolkArt Paint by Plaid in White, Apple Red and Sequin Sliver
New Pearl Formula Mod Podge
Snowflake Cookie Cutter
Work the clay into a soft lump. Between 2 sheets of wax paper, flatten the clay. Use the rolling pin to smooth it out to a consistent 1/4 inch thickness.
On a hard flat surface, press your pet’s paw into the clay. Add additional pressure to ensure a well defined paw print. You may need an additional hand for this depending on how squirmy your pet is. Bitly did pretty good until I had to add a little pressure to her paw to press it into the clay.
Carefully center the snowflake cookie cutter over the paw print and press downward. Remove access clay and carefully push the snowflake shape out of the cookie cutter.
Bake the clay according to the directions.
Time to paint your paw print snowflake ornament! First, I gave my ornament 2 layers of white (the clay got a little yellowish when it baked), then I pained the paw print in Apple Red. Outline the edge of the paw print first, then fill in the rest. This also got 2 coats to make it pop 🙂 Be sure to allow the paint to dry completely between layers.
I also added my pups name “Bitly” and the year with some Bright Gold FolkArt paint to the back of this ornament… ya know… for posterity and such 🙂
Next I added a thin layer of Sequin Silver glitter paint to the whole thing. After allowing that to dry, I topped the whole thing off with a thin layer of the new Pearl Formula Mod Podge to seal it and add just a little glow.
I LOVE the way this turned out! The multi surface FolkArt Paints by Plaid Crafts were the perfect choice for this project! Its pretty much the only paint you’ll ever need! Its great for painting wood, glass, ceramic, metal, terra cotta, rigid plastic, canvas, styrofoam, slate, paper mache and fabric!! So many pr0ject options in one bottle! This paint also has a patented, self-sealing formula that offers superior coverage for fewer coats and quicker drying times. #Winning!
The New Pearl Formula Mod Podge was the perfect finishing touch, and even though this paw print snowflake ornament didn’t need to be sealed, it does provide a little peace of mind and the perfect “glow”. Mod Podge is made in the USA and is the original all-in-one sealer, glue and finish. It’s perfect for wood, paper, fabric and other porous surfaces, such as terra cotta, plastic foam, and candles, it’s quick and so easy to use. As a glue, it dries clear and holds tight. Non-toxic with a soap and water clean up makes it great for kids. As a sealer it protects acrylic paints, stains, decoupage and fabric. No crafter should be without it, especially at Christmas and you can bet that I’ll be using it on some more ornaments soon!
What do you think? Is this Paw Print Snowflake Ornament the perfect addition to your tree full of memories?
