The Hottest European Destinations to Explore this Summer

Winter is almost behind us, and that means one thing: summer is in sight. As you scour cheap flights and bargain holidays, that excitement is starting to build. Where will you explore this year? Who will come? Is there anything you’d love to tick off your bucket list?

For culture and scenery, Europe never gets old. Yet, there is surprising diversity to be found across its patchwork region of tight-knit countries. Ready for a summer of a lifetime? Here are the hottest European destinations for a warm-weather getaway.

1. Mediterranean Beach Escapes

Sun-soaked coastlines, slow-paced seaside towns, and Mediterranean cuisine … aka the dietary secret to longevity. Nothing spells restoration like a beach escape in the Med.

Greece and Italy are the big contenders here. Think Sicily, Santorini, and Positano. Speaking of trends, You, Me & Tuscany is set to release later this year, and was actually filmed on Italy’s Amalfi Coast. Consider Amalfi Coast tours for dramatic scenery including pastel-colored buildings precariously teetering on dramatic cliffs and beaches adorned with fishing boats.

2. Central European Cultural Capitals

Central Europe is summer-approved, with itinerary-inspiring history, Insta-worthy architecture, and enough world-class dining to keep the most adventurous foodies satiated. Vienna, Prague, Warsaw, Budapest, and Berlin. Pick one, or combine a few by rail to embrace culture full-throttle.

Don’t be afraid to veer from the “central” definition, either. Paris and Madrid are accessible in Western Europe, while Baltic Europe is a trendy alternative. Liepāja is a soon-to-blossom city in Latvia, voted the European Capital of Culture for 2027. Why not get ahead of the trend? Beat the crwds with an add-on weekend.

3. Scenic Alpine Retreats

Some people love beaches, others are drawn to the mountains. For those who fall into the latter category, Europe’s Alpine regions are the perfect summer escape. Enjoy cool weather, glorious views, and farm-to-table cuisine.

Switzerland, Italy, France, and Slovenia are the best spots for an alpine retreat. Will you be hiking between mountain huts? Catching a scenic rail journey? Or booking a restorative resort with spa facilities and an infinity pool?

4. Island Adventures Across Europe

Think you know Europe? The region’s islands are here to change your mind. Blessed with microclimates, coastlines, and cultures of their own, these destinations shift between “relaxing holiday” and “it’s time for an adventure.” Capri, Patmos, and Hydra are among the trending spots for 2026. Certain islands, like Madeira, have a reputation for raising pulses – Stairway to Heaven hike, anyone? The Azores is another heartbreaker, with volcanic landscapes to explore on foot and thermal pools to decompress afterwards.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when booking a summer holiday in Europe. There are so many regions, experiences, and activities to sift through; nobody wants to accidentally overlook a dream destination. Start with these four categories, and go from there.
