… then come the messes!
But oh the love that comes with a new puppy! When we added Buffer to our family at the beginning of October, the timing couldn’t have been worse. My Mom was here for a week long visit, it was the beginning of the busy season for my handmade shop, work was picking up on the blog and the holidays were practically here. But one lick on the chin from that scrappy little puppy and I was a goner!
It took a little longer for the rest of the family to come around, well her big sister Bitly anyways, but now they’re best friends! Adding a new pet to the family can be an interesting experience, no matter how much puppy love there is, there will also be moments of pure frustration and so many messes!
Thank goodness fur babies are adorable 😉
If you’re planning on bringing home a new puppy anytime soon, there are some things you need to know, and think about, beforehand!
#1 Do Some Research!
With Buffer, not a whole lot of research was required. She is the same breed as Bitly (same fur-parents too!), so we knew what we were getting into with her breed needs. But don’t just research a breed, research the rescue/breeder you’ll be getting your new BFFF (best fur friend forever)from. It’s also a good idea to watch some youtube videos about your breed and some puppy training tips and tricks. It’s important to be prepared when you bring your new puppy home.
#2 Puppy Proof Your Home!
If more than 3 minutes of thought had gone into adding Buffer to the family, I would have pre-puppy proofed the whole house. When we got home, it was a scramble to beat her to things she shouldn’t be getting into, BEFORE she got into them!
Check to make sure that all wires and cords are tucked up and that there are no small pieces of anything on the floor. Make sure shoes, special toys or items, and anything else you don’t want chewed to bits is up off the floor. Check under and behind EVERYTHING! If it’s there your puppy WILL find it and chew it.
#3 Puppy Messes Will Happen.
There will be accidents when it comes to potty training your new BFFF, thats a guarantee. Be patient and never yell when there is an accident. I’ve never successfully trained a dog by screaming and yelling when they make a mistake. Focus on reinforcing the good behavior… lots of pets, treats and praise when they do what they’re supposed to do.
AND pick up some STAINMASTER® Carpet Pet Stain Remover at Target (its in the Cleaning Aisle of some Targets. I was able to find mine at the Target in Wichita Falls). This little spray bottle is practically magic when it comes to accidents on the carpet! We all know that new puppies and carpet are not a match made in heaven, quite the opposite actually.
Puppies tend to like soft, comfortable spots to do their “business” … aka your carpeted rooms. STAINMASTER® Carpet Pet Stain Remover removes stubborn stains, eliminates odors and there is no stickiness left behind. PLUS you can breathe easy thanks to the powerful ODOR REMOVE™technology, which starts to eliminate odors within minutes. Because puppy “business” can equal icky stink!
All you have to do is…
SPRAY: Spray product liberally and directly on affected areas.
WAIT: Wait 3-5 minutes to allow solution to penetrate the stain.
BLOT: Dampen the spot with water and blot with a clean, colorfast paper towel or cloth. Repeat as necessary to remove the stain. For best results treat stain immediately.
The most important thing you need to know about your new fur friend is that Puppy Love quickly becomes fur-ever love! Once that little ball of fur wiggles their way into your heart, you won’t be able to imagine a life with out them! Seriously! Buffer has only been in the family for a couple of months, but she’s easily been one of the best spur-of-the-moment decisions we’ve ever made!
STAINMASTER Carpet Pet Stain Remover is not available at all Target locations, but it is available online. Click here to find STAINMASTER Carpet Pet Stain Remover, or have it shipped for free, to your local Target store.

What a cute puppy! They are definitely a handful though!
We have a cat, and I could definitely use that stain treatment. I just bought a new rug and we were taking bets on how long it would be before the cat would throw up on the rug – sure enough, it wasn’t even 24 hours! Between the kids and pets, I can’t keep up with the messes!

We have 4 new surprise pups around our house and we love it. I think your little one is so cute. I just love puppies. Great tips here. It’s always important to safety proof the house.

Ahhh!! So precious. I need to pick up some of this stain remover. We have two cats and they certainly make a mess of our NEW carpet. I am sure puppies are the same way.

Puppies are so cute but they can be so messy! Our Great Dane took a year and a half to housetrain! Still, they are more than worth the time and commitment in the end, at least in my opinion. I agree that people need to do their research about the dog they want first and not just get one on a whim. It isn’t fair to them or the animal if they do.

So darn cute!!! I know I learned after getting my puppy that I had to dog proof the house and make sure I Put things up to keep it from eating it.

What an adorable pup. You are so right, messes will certainly happen so it’s best to be prepared! {client}

I fall in love with puppies every time I see them and then I am reminded of all of the messes they create. And all of the extra work that raising a puppy creates! Cleaning up puppy buisness is not my favorite thing to do (is it really anyones? LOL!)..but looks like Stainmaster makes it bearable.

I remember when we adopted our dog…she was a year old but definitely acted like a puppy…so many accidents! I agree that Stainmaster is a great product for keeping your house clean with animals (and kids!) around. Because there is always someone making a new mess in my house…yikes!

OMG you have just given me puppy fever all over again. I love puppies and it seems like this weekend when I was on my trip that they were just everywhere. However, before I can adopt one I have to make sure I have a house with a yard so they can get out and about to stretch and play when they want too.

Oh, my goodness. How adorable is Buffer, he’s a cutie! It’s been a long time since we’ve had a puppy in the use. We usually adopt older dogs from rescue societies or the pound. But even with older dogs, having Stainmaster on hand is a good thing.
Bites for Foodies says
Oh my goodness, can your pup be ANY cuter?!?! We have a chug (chihuahua-pug mix). This cleaner looks like ti does the trick…I always use vinegar and water with baking soda and works well too!

I am hoping to be able to get a dog if I move. We can’t have any pets, not even to puppy sit. So cute, what a little heart stealer! This is helpful information, too.
