Today’s chat about self care and taking an adult time out is brought to you by Café Breaks! All opinions are my own.
Being an adult is hard y’all! Never, ever in my rush to “grow up” did I imagine that it would be this hard! I was totally that kid, you know the one that interjected in adult conversations, acted like they were 25 instead of 1o, bossing everybody around, talking about how “one day I’ll…”. Yup. That was me, and it drove my mother crazy!
Fast forward 20 some odd years, I’m in my 30’s and I’m the one telling my friends kids to chill! That being an adult can totally suck sometimes and they should enjoy their childhood and teen years while they can! Also, they should never shave their legs… cause once they start it’ll neverrrrrrrrrrrrr end!
Paying bills. Keeping small creatures alive (both the human and pet variety). Cleaning the house. Being the “responsible” one. Paying more bills. Jobs + Clients + Work. Mowing the grass. Remembering to check the mail. Making dinner. Maintaining healthy relationships. Running Errands. Transporting small creatures to various activities and appointments. Paying MORE bills… IT NEVER ENDS!
Sometimes you just need an adult time out. A little ME time. A little self care in the chaos that is everyday life.
My favorite adult time out? A yummy snack, a good book and my bed. Toss in some pretty flowers for a little visual enjoyment and a snuggly throw and I am in heaven!
Well… at least until my husband comes barging in or the dogs jump on the bed and spill things. I can only imagine what adding a couple kids to the mix would do to my adult time out mojo… *shudder*
So to keep the husband (and occasionaly the non-knocking mother in law) out when I’m chilling and un-adulting, I made this fabulous and easy DIY Adult Time Out Sign!
Want to make one for yourself? Here’s what you’ll need!
Chalkboard Sign
Metallic Paint Pen (I went with copper)
Printer and Paper
Chalk
Chalk Pen
scissors
washi tape
ball point pen
Create your design with an editing tool like picmonkey.com or you can USE THIS ONE that I designed for my own sign. Print and trim to fit your chalkboard sign.
Rub the chalk all over the BACK side of your design paper. Make sure its a good, thick, even coat!
Tape your design in place on chalkboard sign with washi tape.
Carefully trace the letters with your ballpoint pen. This will give you a light outline to use to paint your design. Try not to put pressure on the design with your hand when tracing. This will transfer additional chalk residue and make it harder to see your letter outlines.
Remove the design paper and carefully paint in the letters with the paint pen.
Allow to dry fully.
All you need to do now is add the reason you need an adult time out! Then hang your sign, grab a snack, and hide away for a quick little break!
Lately when I need an adult time out and a little snack, I grab a Café Breaks pudding cup (available in the pudding section of your local Walmart) and whatever book I am reading, put my sign on the door, and lock the world away for a solid 15 or 20 minutes. Taking a few minutes for some self care and a mental break makes me a much happier person, and probably makes the world safer and happier too!
I’m currently a little addicted to the Mocha Latte flavor Cafe Break! And the caramel is a favorite as well. They’re a tasty and easy snack for when I need a little pick me up!
Whats your favorite way to take an adult time out?
